I think it would be helpful in general to include distances in the game (in miles or kilometers). When you move units, it would tell you both the distance they will travel and how long it will take. This would be useful in knowing how far away you need to keep your army from a railgun that you know is there but is out of visual range. Also, knowing how far you can travel per hour in friendly territory vs on railroads vs enemy territory could be useful in planning, rather than one hour of travel being an ambiguous distance on your screen.
Just a thought. Good? Stupid?
Edit: Also, when you see enemy troops moving, it only shows their route to the next city, intersection, border, or turn. Knowing distances and travel speeds would give you the ability to know how long it will take for their army to reach its destination...like your city.
