Splitting troops

I've been playing this for a long time and recently started to play again.
I noticed that when people split their troops u get stronger and kills everything.... Is this something that's been implemented or bug abuse?
Cause my friend attacked an enemy with 20 against 10 and got slaughtered, shouldn't the strength reduce if you do that???
